This course provides participants with the refreshed and updated skills and knowledge required for working safely at heights in the resources and infrastructure industries. Participants will refresh their knowledge on how to effectively eliminate or control risks associated with workplace falls by carrying out WHS requirements through safe work practices.

Course Content

This course covers:

  • Legislation
  • Policy and procedures
  • Safety systems and equipment
  • Fall prevention measures and devices
  • Fall arrest systems
  • Ladder risk controls
  • Equipment selection, inspection and maintenance
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and controls
  • Handling and securing equipment and materials
  • Emergency procedures
  • Correct fitting of full body harnesses


Participants must have successfully completed and hold a current Statement of Attainment for the required unit of competency or its equivalent issued within the last three years. This evidence must be provided when making a booking request.

Participants should have the physical ability to successfully complete practical tasks ranging from donning a fall arrest harness to climbing ladder systems.

Participants should also have language, literacy and numeracy skills at the level required to read, complete, interpret and communicate workplace documentation relevant to working at heights. This includes entry permits, equipment checklists and risk assessments.

On successful completion of both the written and practical requirements of this course, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment and a Wallet Card for RIIWHS204E - Work safely at heights.


Each work site will have its own refresher period requirements. Please check with the work site where you will be working. Generally, industry specific requirements for recertification range from every 12 months to every 3 years.
