SGS Celebrates World Accreditation Day on June 9, 2022

May 31, 2022

Enabling a better, safer and more interconnected world.

World Accreditation Day (WAD) is a joint initiative of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) to raise awareness of the importance of accreditation. This year’s theme is Accreditation: Sustainability in Economic Growth and the Environment and how accreditation supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation is the independent evaluation of conformity assessment bodies against recognised national and international standards for carrying out specific activities. It ensures integrity, impartiality, compliance and competence. By verifying compliance with standards, accreditation protects consumers and removes technical and economic barriers to trade, providing opportunities for products and services to go global.

How does accreditation help businesses?

Businesses use accreditation to improve their reputation, attract and retain staff, and increase their opportunities for growth. The implementation of an accredited health and safety management system allows businesses to:

  • Minimise the risk of downtime because of accidents
  • Demonstrate compliance with best practice
  • Reduce the cost of public liability insurance premiums
  • Demonstrate their commitment to legal obligations

What are the SDGs?

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were developed with the aim of achieving “peace and prosperity for people and planet” by 2030. They form a roadmap for creating sustainable businesses and a better world. Investors and enterprises are increasingly taking action to achieve the SDGs, in the hope of creating a positive impact on society and the environment.
Many of the ISO and other sustainability standards contribute to the UN SDGs.

Why do businesses need the SDGs?

Businesses need the SDGs for two main reasons: lowering the cost of capital and managing risk.  Integrating the SDGs into business strategy and operations can protect an organisation against operational, regulatory and reputational risks.

What standards/schemes are recommended for sustainability in economic growth and the environment?

  • SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation: ISO 14001, WARFSA
  • SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy: ISO 50001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001
  • SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth: ISO 45001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001
  • SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001
  • SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities: ISO 45001, ISO 50001
  • SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, ISO 22000
  • SDG 13 Climate Action: ISO14000, ISO 14001, ISO 50001
  • SDG 14 Life Below Water: MSC, ISO 9001, ISO 14001
  • SDG 15 Life On Land: ISO 14000, ISO 14001
