SGS Celebrates Cultural Diversity Across Australia with Harmony Week

March 14, 2021
Sunslight Passing Through Forest
This week is Harmony week. A week to celebrate cultural diversity across Australia and for us at SGS Australia to reflect on our own multiculturalism – which is something we are proud of!

According to the Harmony Week government website 45% of Australians are born overseas or have at least one parent who was. At SGS Australia, based on our last diversity data survey, we are pleased to see that we can match this with 45.7% of participants being born overseas. Nearly half of these employees speak more than one language – from Turkish, Hungarian, Serbian, Portuguese, French through to Chinese, Mandarin, Japanese, Cantonese and many, many more. More than 32 languages are spoken!

Building a multicultural workforce is easy for us, we have always been good at attracting people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. We are also proud of the work we are doing with the Reconciliation Action Plan to increase opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We are fortunate to have operations in so many places across Australia and continue to identify new opportunities for people in underrepresented groups.

The theme for 2021, #everyonebelongs, is something we truly support and believe in. Creating an inclusive environment has been a strong focus for us, especially in the last 8 months. For us to see true inclusion we want employees to feel a sense of belonging, that they are respected and connected and a feeling of contribution and progression.
